There's a scene in Spirited Away that has always deeply affected me:
the moment when Chihiro cleans and frees the river spirit.
What appears to be a dark and polluted monster eventually reveals its true form: an ancient god trapped under the weight of the human world.
While painting this work, I thought about that image over and over again.
In that humble and brave gesture of a girl who, without fully understanding what is happening, trusts her intuition and helps.
Chihiro not only unleashes the river spirit: she unleashes herself.
That moment is a beautiful metaphor for something we all experience at some point:
Cleanse what hurts, release what weighs you down, and discover that underneath it all there was light.
I wanted the painting to have that same energy:
the sensation of moving water, of mud turning into clarity, of a being reborn.
I worked with a soft, almost liquid palette, with transitions reminiscent of a silent transformation: wet greens, murky blues that open up in light, golden touches that symbolize revealed truth.
It is not a literal scene, but an emotional interpretation of what that encounter represents:
compassion, symbolic cleansing, the courage to look at what seems ugly and discover its hidden beauty.
Painting this work was like remembering that we all carry a “river” inside:
a place that asks to be listened to, to be cleaned, to be freed.
