“Agreement — Tribute to the Surrender of Breda

“Agreement — Tribute to the Surrender of Breda

“Agreement — Homage to The Surrender of Breda ” is an ink reinterpretation of one of the works that has most profoundly marked my way of looking at the history of art: The Surrender of Breda , by Diego Velázquez.

I've always been fascinated by this painting because it doesn't just celebrate military victory, but something much more difficult to represent:
the nobility of recognizing the dignity of the vanquished .

That moment when two enemies look at each other with respect, honor, and humanity strikes me as one of the most beautiful agreements ever depicted on a canvas. A moment where empathy outweighs conquest, and where the symbolic gesture of handing over keys becomes an act of spiritual greatness.

In this ink version, each stroke is my way of paying homage to that historical emotion: the peace that is born from mutual recognition, the light that appears when conflict ceases to be a border and becomes a bridge.

This work is part of Inktober 2025 , a journey in which I used ink to revisit references that have accompanied my artistic and emotional development.
