“The dancer with candles” is inspired by the dance of the dancer Myriam Soler.

I met Myriam in Istanbul in 2010.

I have always been struck by her strength when dancing. She is imposing like a lioness and at the same time, she transmits a lot of sensitivity.

Another curiosity of this painting is its colors: both the tiles and the warm, earthy yellow color are inspired by the Real Alcázar of Seville, where I had the opportunity to visit while painting the series.

I wanted to capture Myriam in a dance full of contrasts: on the one hand, her clothing with embroidery and vibrant colors, against the balance of the candles on her head while she dances, and her expression of enjoyment in a situation that, despite its difficulty, she makes affable.
